FBI: Terror Attack to Unseat Chicago’s Mayor Daley
Sept 22nd, 2010: Updated with new information (see below)
During the spring of 2009, FBI agents paid a confidential source (hereinafter referred to as “CS”) to meet with a twenty-two year old Lebanese Chicago resident, Sami Samir Hassoun, according to an affidavit filed Monday. The CS and Hassoun subsequently developed a friendship and met multiple times per week for approximately one year.
After the two had been well acquainted for about a year, Hassoun allegedly told the CS that he wanted to take action that would force Chicago’s Mayor Daley from power. The CS told Hassoun that they had “friends” who might be interested in some of the ideas that Hassoun had recently expressed who, according to the CS, would be willing to pay the CS and Hassoun to engage in such activity.
According the CS, Hassoun had been considering attacks that would command public attention. In one alleged scenario, Hassoun suggested placing a bomb in Daley Plaza during the then upcoming Arabesque festival.
In response, the CS asked: “You’re going to hit Arab people?” In his reply, Hassoun assured the CS he would not detonate an actual bomb, but would, instead, set off a device that only emanates smoke when activated.
The CS, however, rejected a downtown bombing, explaining that the money they would be paid for their efforts did not justify such a high profile target. As an alternative, Hassoun allegedly suggested bombing Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, or its’ surrounding area. Hassoun explained that the majority of Chicago’s youth spend their weekends at bars and restaurants and that an attack against an entertainment center like the one near Wrigley Field could “paralyze” commerce.
The CS told Hassoun that, whatever the plan may be, they did not want to actually kill anyone. Hassoun agreed by stating: “No killing. There is no killing.”
The CS later added that if Hassoun followed their instructions, their “friends” might be willing to provide Hassoun with a house and a nice car.”
Hassoun told the CS that he wanted to do “something” on July 4, 2010. The CS, however, sought to discourage Hassoun from any immediate action, telling Hassoun that they needed to first meet with their contacts. Hassoun claimed he was devising some sort of device that appeared as a toy, but when activated, would cause a minor explosion that would not cause injury, but would expel tiny notes containing ominous warnings.
The CS instructed Hassoun to remain patient, and reminded Hassoun that they were doing this for payment, stating, “You are going to make money.”
On July 8th, 2010, a meeting between Hassoun, the CS and the aforementioned “friends” met at a hotel in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood. Unbeknownst to Hassoun, the “friends” were undercover FBI task force officers. According to the affidavit, Hassoun explained he had been thinking of ideas of how to foster a “revolution” in Chicago. In particular, Hassoun explained that, through a series of escalating terrorist attacks, conspirators could undermine the mayor’s political support, allowing one of their associates to gain control of the city.
When asked what day he wanted to execute the proposed attack. Hassoun allegedly recommended the evening of Saturday, September 11, 2010, which Hassoun called a “beautiful day.” (Allegedly)
Two weeks later, on July 26th, Hassoun began posting a series of comments on his Facebook profile:

On August 12th, Hassoun allegedly travelled to Lakeview, a neighborhood south of Chicago’s Wrigleyville, and filmed the area of Clark Street and Belmont Avenue, identifying security measures in the area. Shortly thereafter, he allegedly proceeded west to the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Halsted Street where Hassoun, who was again accompanied by an unknown male.
Five days later, Hassoun begins to post another series of comments on his Facebook profile:

On August 31st, as instructed by FBI undercover agents, Hassoun met with them at a hotel in Rosemont, Illinois, and brought a backpack, two-way radios, batteries, and maps that the agents had requested during a previous meeting.
The undercover agents told Hassoun that they had decided to delay the strike one week, due to alleged concerns that additional security would exist on the anniversary of September 11, 2001.
Several days later, Hassoun resumed posting to his Facebook profile:

The September 18th Facebook entry would be Hassoun’s final post.
Note: On September 7th, Chicago’s Mayor Richard Daley announced he would not seek reelection in 2011.
As previously planned, Hassoun met with the FBI undercover agents on the evening of September 18th, to execute the proposed bombing. Hassoun arrived at approximately 11:18 p.m. at the prearranged location, a hotel in Rosemont, Illinois.
In the hotel room, FBI undercover agents presented Hassoun with a phony bomb, housed by a one-gallon paint can. Although the device was designed to appear to be an actual explosive, it was constructed of inert material, incapable of detonation.
At approximately 11:37 p.m., Hassoun and the FBI undercover left the hotel and proceeded from Rosemont to the target area, “Slugger’s” sports bar, located at 3450 North Clark Street. While in route, the undercover agents and Hassoun discussed how Wrigleyville would be crowded because Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, was hosting a Dave Matthews concert that evening.
During their drive, the agents allegedly informed Hassoun that the bomb would likely destroy half a city block, if not more, and that as a result of their actions, Chicago would be “different city tomorrow.”
However, nothing in the affidavit or on Hassoun’s Facebook page indicates that he intended to kill anyone, aside from this statement, and the following entry:
“…when further discussing their ideas, Hassoun and the CS agreed that they should plan an initial diversionary incident, followed by a more substantial strike that would likely result in casualties.”
Hassoun and undercover agents arrived at the target location at approximately 12:10 a.m. in the early morning of September 19, 2010. Hassoun exited the vehicle, carrying a shopping bag containing a backpack which held the phony bomb constructed by the FBI.
As planned, Hassoun proceeded directly to the target and deposited what he allegedly understood to be a ticking time-bomb. He then attempted to make his way back to the vehicle, but was arrested by awaiting law enforcement agents.
For your consideration:
If Hassoun was guided and paid to commit this act, Cui bono? (Latin: Who benefits?)
Was Hassoun primed with disinformation in the year leading up to the event, causing him to initially want to frame Arabs? If so, then this reads as follows:
False-flag terror is a reality, only it is not sponsored by the usual suspects, as many have claimed. It is sponsored by lone-wolf types from Lebanon.
Again: Who benefits?
Moreover, why would an Arab attack Arabs and frame Arabs for the crime?
Why was Hassoun “drivin between police stations all night long”, as stated on his Facebook profile?
Are we to believe that Hassoun was convinced that a bomb the size of a paint-can had enough power to “destroy half a city block”?
How does the goal of bringing down Chicago’s Mayor Daley play a factor? Does this have anything to do with Rahm Emanuel’s desire to run for the office of Chicago Mayor?

While the AP writer makes a case for entrapment, there’s a critical inaccuracy in his article:
“An informant tipped off authorities about Hassoun, and befriended him over a year…”
Not according to the affidavit…
“…investigating FBI agents asked the CS, who had previously assisted and been compensated by the FBI in connection with his/her cooperation, and was compensated for his/her assistance in this matter, to meet and befriend Hassoun.”
Apparently, the CS had not personally met with Hassoun, prior to their meeting him at the request of the FBI. Where did the CS learn of Hassoun? One possibility be might be an online meeting via the social networking website Facebook.
Sept 22nd, 2010 updates:
It appears that Hassoun was interviewed in 2004 regarding his brother, Cpl. Wassef Hassoun, a Marine translator, being held hostage in Iraq:
On the tape, a speaker said the man was lured from his base and captured, and his captors threatened to kill him unless U.S. military authorities release Iraqi prisoners.
“It is him, 100 percent,” Sami Hassoun said of the hostage on the video. “I wish it was not him.
“We’re Muslims like they are. It is not possible that Islam says to kill these people. And there’s no religion in the whole world that supports a kidnapper and a killer. No morals, no ethics.” (source)
There are a growing number of (currently 50+) comments on Hassoun’s final Facebook entry, some from people that personally new him. Here are a few interesting posts:
Akil Henry ya’ll need to leave him alone. You know the FBI set him up.
16 hours ago · LikeAkil Henry read the damn story, the FBI started following him after he said something, and they won’t disclose it. So basically the FBI was hyping him up, all the stories said the FBI paid him money to leave his job and look up places to bomb. Shit, it wouldn’t even be a damn bomb (real or fake) if the FBI plants hadn’t gave it to him. Its the same as saying you want to kill someone and someone agreeing and giving you the knife. We know Sami personally and he wouldn’t just go and do some shit like that.
16 hours ago · Like · 4 peopleKevin Obomanu Akil: EXACTLY. Sami was just a dumbass to go along with it. A giant dumbass.
16 hours ago · LikeMoe Halabi dude ive known sami for bout 8 years this shit is crazy
15 hours ago · LikeMoe Halabi Everyone see this link.. the fbi made him do that shit.. peer pressure is a bitch.
15 hours ago · Like · 1 personAkil Henry If it’s the intention that matters, what does that say about the people who gave the device to him? I didn’t say I defended what he did, I’m just saying I believe that if the FBI wasn’t there in the background hyping him up, nothing would ofhappened. There’s gonna be intention to do something if someone is in your ear hyping up the possibility. Ever heard of COINTELPRO? Sounds pretty similar in a way. All I’m trying to say is don’t believe everything you hear on the news.
12 hours ago · LikeKevin Obomanu Ruth - OMG. YOU don’t know him that well. As far as I know you never met him. I am not defending him, but I am stating what I know from the articles I read and what I know about him. He is not a bad guy (just an idiot who talks too much shit) and if you have been reading some of the articles, they have been following him for “undisclosed reasons” BEFORE any of his grandiose ideas came about. Based on what I have read and what I know about him, I think he was set up. I am not saying I am right, but it looks like the intent was procured not solely on his own. Many articles point out that he did not have the intent of hurting anyone originally until later while he had befriended the informant. To me, that sounds like some of the blame doesn’t go to him. We’ll find out as the investigation and later the trial goes on, though. Again, I could be wrong and I am not drawing any conclusions until I know the whole story. Also, if you haven’t read my previous comments, I actually think he should go to jail for a bit, regardless of his intent or what not, because he was stupid. I think he seriously needs a slap in the face for being a dumbass, and I hope jail time is a big enough slap. Finally, if any of my friends got hurt because of his stupidity, I would be beyond infuriated with him and whatever jail time he gets he would rightfully deserve. I don’t know if I would still say the same things I am saying now, but I do know if you or Gavin were gone bc of his stupidity, I would be devastated.

12 hours ago · LikeKevin Obomanu I think this time someone took one of his wild stories seriously and then believed in him, sort of egged him on into what is now the talk of the town. I feel sorry for his family though. I met of few of his family members about two weeks ago and I am sure they are greatly embarrassed.
12 hours ago · LikeKiba Wolf actualy i have been with him for a little while , when he first came to US in 2008 and whena tornado blasted chicago about july that year , he started telling his freinds that his house was bought down and he saved a woman :P and he makes it seem real!!!!!
12 hours ago · Like · 2 peopleKevin Obomanu Kiba - I know a few people in his family and I am sure they were shocked to hear that! I was shocked too! And I am sure his punishment in Lebanon by his family would be more severe than any prison time served here. I definitely think foolishness should be punished, especially by the family. He should be punished like a 9-year-old for this - his mama with a belt. Ruth - I may know only 1% of you, but I do believe that you wouldn’t intend to hurt anyone. I figure Sami to be somewhat gullible and can be easily coerced, which is why I don’t think the intent was entirely his own. He tends to act like a child at times. I know that you’re not gullible by any means; you tend to be very aggressive at times when provoked, but yet you can be sweet and goofy and you don’t act juvenile.

A friend of Hassoun was recently interviewed:
CHICAGO — A friend of a 22-year-old arrested in an alleged bomb plot in Chicago describes the suspect as a one-time aspiring doctor bent on achieving quick fame and fortune.
Restaurant owner Joseph Abraham says he’s known Sami Samir Hassoun for a year and a half. He says Hassoun immigrated to the U.S. from a Lebanese village nearly three years ago.
The 49-year-old says Hassoun liked to boast about his achievements. But he says they were often lies to try and show he was a big shot.
Abraham says he was shocked by charges accusing Hassoun of planting a device he thought was a bomb near Chicago’s Wrigley Field on Sunday.
He says Hassoun wasn’t religious, drank and went to nightclubs. Abraham thinks Hassoun must have been bluffing with FBI undercover agents and that’s what got him in trouble. (source)

“That’s not what he told the Feds. Whoopsie-daisies. Just last week he was telling the FBI to “bring it on” in an arrogance-packed speech presumably in preparation for a shot at Daley’s seat, just fresh off a meeting with Rahm Emanuel. Guess they listened.” (source)

“Emanuel, who would be running to replace Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, could depart by early October, after Congress leaves for recess to campaign for the midterm elections, the people said on condition of anonymity.” (source)
